On the heels of last weekend’s abhorrent white supremacy rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, the nation watched wearily as event organizers in Boston touted another “free speech rally” today. Bostonians, however, had no plans of standing idly by while their city turned into a symbol of hate.

The hate speech rally in Boston has about 100 white supremacists and TWENTY THOUSAND peaceful protestors…

To counter the nearly 100 “free speech” demonstrators, approximately 15,000 counterprotestors took to the streets. The Boston Free Speech Coalition, which organized the rally, had initially planned to include notable white nationalists as speakers. It was only after the horrific acts of violence in Charlottesville last weekend that the organization began to distance itself from these speakers and the hate groups in attendance.

“While we maintain that every individual is entitled to their freedom of speech and defend that basic human right, we will not be offering our platform to racism or bigotry,” the group said in a Facebook posttoday. “We denounce the politics of supremacy and violence.”

That did not deter the tens of thousands of counterprotestors from showing up on Saturday. The Boston police, for their part, dispatched 500 police officers to keep the rally attendees apart from the counterprotestors.

While a white supremacy rally might have gained traction in Virginia, Boston had other plans, drowning out the “rally” with the largest counterprotest in their history. Boston just sent a clear message to the rest of the nation: hate has no place in the United States.
